Last night after I had watched the ball drop in Times Square in New York City, I turned the channel to NBC and was watching the Jay Leno show. About 11:50 Central Time, the program changed to the local (5 hours away) moon pie drop in downtown Mobile Alabama. I learned some very important fun facts about the State of Alabama. Did you know that Alabama is the Moon Pie Capital of the country? Now, can’t say that I have enjoyed a moon pie since moving down here 7 months ago, or for that fact I don’t recall even seen one at the store. I’ll be looking for them now. Secondly, the home of the first Mardi Gras in the States was Mobile Alabama. And sure enough at 12:00 CST, the Moon Pie dropped and the year 2011 began in Alabama style! Happy New Year!

MOBILE, Alabama – With laser lights, fireworks and cheering Mobile’s MoonPie fell to ring in 2011. Royal Street was packed with people. This despite occasional showers or spitting rain. Director of public relations at the Battle House Hotel estimates tonight’s crowd at 40,000 people. The evening started with a parade and live music.

City officials said they wanted to build on the MoonPie drops of 2008 and 2009. Organizers aimed to make this event something citizens of Mobile and the entire Central Time Zone can be proud of.
