Moving to a new server can be trying at the best of times. When you go from total control to a dedicated, hosted solution; doubly so… So, due to the fact that I am possibly a glutton for punishment, that is exactly what I am doing. If you add to the mix – changing completely the architecture and OS – then you will understand where I am at.
Things overall have gone well. I now have all the websites running on the new server, and all the services that I need are configured. Now I just have the final task of the switch over to the new system.
I have all but one client running on the new setup, so it should be relatively painless to make the final switch. Then comes the real fun part… Changing Comcast over from the business service I now have to a more limited residential service. I am so NOT looking forward to calling them. Historically when I call for any service changes, I am the one who gets screwed in the deal. Take earlier this summer, when I cut my cable TV off. I call them to disconnect the service, and remind them that I have internet service on a different, business account. The kind folks assure me that things like this are normal, and the technicians are well versed in how to handle it properly. I stressed over and over that the last time they made changes to my account, it disconnected both services. I further stressed to them that I have a business, and could not afford to have them drop my service on a whim. After several hollow reassurances, and promises that it would be different this time, I hung up the phone. I had a real sinking feeling that they would once again drop the ball. Like clockwork, and as no surprise to me, they dutifully came out and cut all my services off. Cable TV, internet, the works! After some 45 minutes explaining to them that they were, how can I say, less than intelligent.
The short answer is that they did finally figure out the malfunction and get me back up and running. So now here I go again, playing the same game with them. Fortunately they cannot take down my websites this time, just make the rest of my life miserable for a while… What fun!
